Wednesday the 8th February 2017, Finished VNA and showed Steve Irwin Museum videos

I got in and started my B roll, it did not take long to do and there were no problems with it.I added shots from the forge to the museum video and this improved the video a lot I think. After adding all the B roll to Nostalgia, it made my video a lot more spaced and the whole thing flowed a lot better now. Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 15.49.25.png I managed to finish the VNA video, this allowed me to focus on my Ucas so that I weren’t panicking before I went on holiday. I changed the title to Nostalgia as Ingham thought it was more fitting. Simple things like adding fades and titles were the last steps I were adding.

I like the VNA video but it would of been improved if I had a lot more smooth cuts between speaking, a second camera would of easily done this.

After exporting the videos I went to see Steve Irwin about the completed videos. It took a while to see him but eventually we found him, he really liked the short video as it was short looked really appealing and to the spot with interesting information. He liked the longer one for the actual look of it but it seemed he preferred the short videos than the longer. Although he did say he liked the information throughout the video and said he was relieved when he saw the video as he thought he talked too much in the interview.

I enjoyed today as I was doing small amounts of practical work and I discovered what Steve Irwin thought about the videos. I gained a small amount of feedback from Brian and he said to work on getting a few more close ups in The Forge. I like all my videos as I think they all look great, and sound good apart from a few mistakes which I will go over. If I were to do them again I would simply start them a long time before. One thing I particularly liked about the Sumerian Tablets was the scroll right next to the tablets, this provided a great opportunity to frame them all together and I think it looks great.

Tuesday the 7th February 2017, B roll and The Forge

I stopped off just before I got into Blackburn, this was to get some clips of the chimneys of Blackburn, this would provide good footage to compare with when my Nana talks about how many cotton chimneys there were and why they were there.

As I went to different positions around the outskirts of Blackburn pretty much searching for chimneys I realised that one of them could be the forge were James Sharples lived and worked as a painter and a blacksmith.

I carried on walking around to see If  I could find it and it was around this big old ammunitions building heading towards Thwaites. This was really useful as all the footage from my Forge museum video was all inside the museum.

I filmed a few shots like this meant for The Forge video on a different day in which I filmed other B roll, this meant the sky would look different from the other shots but I’ve showed it numerous people and no one has mentioned it.

The location was fairly similar to the painting and I noticed it due to the massive steelwork on the top, I asked and apparently his son worked in Blackburn in the same place after he died.

After discovering The Forge I had to contact Steve and tell him I was adding to the video and that I would show him soon.

I really enjoyed this day because I got out and learnt stuff I didn’t know, I got some really good footage despite the lack of equipment and managed to get what I wanted. I didn’t get to edit so I just imported all the footage and saved it for tomorrow.

Thursday the 2nd January 2017, VNA Production

I never usually name my files in Premiere Pro but this time I had to. This allowed me to get through the visual side of editing a lot quicker.

Today I edited it until all I needed was B roll, after completing the narrative and getting through the most of the visuals throughout the week, all I needed to do was finish of putting all the clips in place and add effects to improve whatever is needed.

Therefore I am ready to collect my B roll in the following week which will provide all I need next. If I were to do today again I wouldn’t change anything as I finished the hard part editing this video.

Monday the 30th January 2017, Editing the VNA, B Roll List

Today I started editing the VNA video, this started of with me importing everything and working on the narrative. After getting feedback from Graham I decided to change the way I edit so that I consider the narrative early as I feel this video would need it considering the lack of different angles.

I started by adding the main interview, I cut it up to info I wanted and then put it together with the other cut up interview angles, this at first made a strange narrative but I knew I’d only need B roll to add breaks and use different interview angles. I had a few problems as I filmed shots of the pictures in her hand past the 180 degree rule, I really liked the shot and thought it worked well as if there was another camera there. Also I liked how the Merry England poster was in the back as it was relevant to what she talked about at the time and focus pulls from both objects looked great.

To keep continuity was a lot of work due to the amount of footage I had to put together with each different question being different angles.

Today went really well as I managed to arrange all the narrative, when I got to this point I made a list of all the places and objects she talks about, this will allow me to go and get B roll of all the relevant things. If I were to do it again I would of tried to get more done as I more than likely could of got the interview visuals near enough completed.

Wednesday the 18th January 2017, Filming VNA

Firstly I had to make my way in to college, grab equipment then go to my straight to my Nana’s house, this was because she was going out and didn’t have much time. More importantly it had taken me a while to even start the VNA video and I had to push to do it at risk of not completing.

Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 12.34.09.png

When I arrived I decided on choosing the back room as it has great lighting with windows all around and loads of different pieces of art which I could frame nicely. The reason I kept this location was as I liked the shadows onto the wall and the way that if I cut to the other side shot you see other art pieces which you can’t see in the above picture.

Unfortunately due to not having enough time I couldn’t film all the questions a few times from different angles as that is ideal for the editor. As a result I had to film different angles on every question and although this makes it harder for the editor and there will be more use of B roll to patch up the spots which won’t flow.  It was a quick job but it allowed me to understand what B roll to pick up, you can’t do that until you know the narrative and seen as I was asking questions it was not possible until after the interview.

The interview went really good as I got all the relevant information about Blackburn town and surrounding areas as well as stories from her childhood which will be ideal in comparing pasts. If I were to do it again I would of done it earlier so that I could of had enough time to get the angles which I wanted, this would improve the narrative and the visuals of my video.

Thursday the 15th December, Last day, Personal Statement and Filming

This was our last day and I spent it completing my Personal statement and having one last check through, this allowed for us to go through it an re word anything which needed it. We also had the task of reducing the word count which we managed to do. After that I paid for it and then waited for our tutor to send it off.

Furthermore I had to film my nana for the V&A video, this went really well and I think the actual look of it is great.

The questions went really well as well and it provided fantastic information which will be the base of the video.

Furthermore I got a contact of my Nana who could provide illustration for my video or possibly an interview.

I will look into the resources she gave me and hopefully collect another interview as she has not replied for a while. She couldn’t give me images either but she helped out enough.
